Government Indecision On Stamp Duty "Freeze" Slows London Housing Market
You could scarcely make it up. A government concerned at its declining popularity lets fly a rumour that there may be a stamp duty freeze "to stimulate the housing market". And then sits back having lunch in Beijing. The net result? Very few buyers prepared to proceed as they await this "freeze" like a proverbial number 9 bus.
Our advice to Gordon Brown? Either get on and do it or make it clear that it was just a way of grabbing some headlines on a bad news day. But don't further undermine the UK housing market with procrastination and indecison.
